A. Shawn Richard

Before practicing law, I was a clinical bioethicist. Part of my role was to intervene in disputes of life and death amongst patients, medical teams and families. For the most part, I was able to resolve these disputes, but on one occasion I was unable to protect a vulnerable patient. The experience led me to the practice of law, to a profession in which I could advocate for clients and effect change. In 2008, I obtained a Juris Doctor, my third degree after my MA in 2002 and Hons. BSc in 2001—all from the University of Toronto. My practice began in complex commercial litigation at Canada’s premiere litigation boutique and has evolved into a family law and estates litigation practice at Lenkinski Law, where I frequently advocate on behalf of clients from the United States and Europe. I am a partner at the firm. I taught Trial Advocacy at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law for 10 years, I am a skills instructor for the Advocates’ Society and I frequently present and write about complex family law issues. I am also the former President of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers.
