The child, a boy, was aged 6 at the date of the alleged wrongful removal. He had spent all of his life in the United States. The parents were divorced; the mother had custody of the child and the father access, albeit with certain additional rights. In July 1993 the mother took the boy to Scotland, her country of origin.
