Information:

The application related to three girls aged 13, 11 and 8 at the date of judgment. The parents were Norwegian nationals but lived in New Jersey, United States of America. In the summer of 1995, the family returned to Norway to oversee the improvement of a hotel which they owned.
The mother said that the relocation was intended to be for 6 to 12 months until the hotel was sold. However, they resided there continuously until 15 November 1998 when the mother took the children back to the United States of America without the consent of the father.
The mother alleged that she and the children suffered physical, emotional and verbal abuse at the hands of the father, both in the United States of America and in Norway. The father applied for the return of the children to Norway.
